Rachel Elizabeth Brosnahan was born on July 12, 1990, in Milwaukee, a Midwestern city whose working-class, American grain runs quietly beneath much of her professional sensibility. She attended Highland Park High School before making her way east, where she studied at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute — institutions that shaped her work across stage, film, and television.

Her screen career spans a range of productions, among them the political drama House of Cards, the series Black Box, Manhattan, and The Blacklist, as well as the film The Unborn. She also serves as an executive producer in addition to her acting work. It is her role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, however, that brought her the most formal recognition: she received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy, for her performance in that show. More recently, she appeared in Superman, extending her work into the feature film landscape.

Brosnahan continues to work as an actress and executive producer, active across multiple formats — stage, film, and television — with her career rooted in the craft training she undertook in New York. Her professional life remains centered on English-language productions, and she continues to be associated with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as one of her defining projects.

I think one of the things I enjoy about acting is the transformation, and part of that is certainly the physical transformation. If people are confused forever, wondering where they have seen me before, that feels like exactly where I want to live. It feels like something's working.

I find theater terrifying. There are no do-overs, you know? It's all happening live. You need to be in it 100 percent at any given moment, and the audience is right there. I'm really intimidated by theater, but it is my first true love. I love theater. I love that anxiety.
