Richard Griffiths was the youngest of five children born to William Edward Griffiths, a businessman, and his wife, Joan (née Rees). He grew up in Rugeley, Staffordshire, where he attended King Edward VI School. Griffiths' early interest in acting led him to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
