Robert Graves was born on 24 July 1895 in Wimbledon, a British subject writing in the English language. He received his education at a succession of institutions, among them Copthorne Preparatory School, Hillbrow School, King's College School, and Charterhouse School, before attending St John's College. Alongside his literary pursuits, he served as a military officer.

Graves worked across a wide range of forms and disciplines, taking on roles as poet, novelist, playwright, translator, screenwriter, literary scholar, mythographer, theatre critic, opinion journalist, and university teacher. His novel I, Claudius represents one of his contributions to long-form fiction. The White Goddess, a study engaging with poetic myth, and The Greek Myths, a treatment of ancient narrative, reflect the mythographic dimension of his career and demonstrate the breadth of his engagement with classical and literary subjects throughout his writing life.

Graves died on 7 December 1985 in Deià.
