Robert Kerr
Robert Kerr was born in Roxburghshire, with sources giving his birth year as either 1755 or 1757. A citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, he was educated at the University of Edinburgh. He worked as a surgeon and physician, and also pursued the roles of biologist, zoologist, historian, linguist, and writer, bringing together medical and scholarly activity across the course of his career.
Kerr wrote in English and engaged with the essay form among other genres. As a translator, he produced an English rendering of the zoological system of Carl Linnaeus, focusing on the class Mammalia and published under the title The Animal Kingdom, or Zoological System, of the Celebrated Sir Charles Linnaeus. He also compiled the substantial work A General History and Collection of Voyages and Travels, a further demonstration of his range as a writer and historian.
Kerr died on 11 October 1813 in Edinburgh.
