Steve Kerr was born to Margaret (née Duff) and Malcolm H. Kerr, both American academics who were professors at the American University of Beirut. His father was also an expert on Middle Eastern politics and a vocal critic of Arab nationalism. Tragically, his father was assassinated in 1984 by Islamic Jihad Organization militants.

Kerr's early life was marked by significant travel between Lebanon, the United States, and Europe due to his family's academic pursuits. He developed a passion for basketball while growing up in Beirut and later attended the University of Arizona, where he played college basketball under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson.
