Walter Salles is a Brazilian film director, screenwriter, and producer, born on April 12, 1956, in Rio de Janeiro, who has worked across Portuguese-language and English-language cinema.

Salles studied at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro before going on to attend the University of Southern California and the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Alongside his career in film, he has also worked as a racing automobile driver, a pursuit that places him in a notably different professional arena from his filmmaking. His notable works as a director include Central Station, The Motorcycle Diaries, and I'm Still Here, three features that together reflect the range of his output over the course of his career. He has received the Order of Cultural Merit from Brazil and has worked in Brazilian Portuguese, Portuguese, and English across his projects.
