The latter decades of the twentieth century saw Latin American literature gain sustained international attention, as writers from the region brought political urgency and formal ambition to poetry and prose alike. Born on December 9, 1948, in Managua, Nicaragua, Gioconda Belli emerged from this period as a poet, novelist, journalist, essayist, librettist, and activist working primarily in Spanish, with a body of work that also extends into English.

Belli holds citizenship in Nicaragua, Italy, Chile, and Spain, a geographical range that reflects the international reach of her career. Her notable work The Inhabited Woman stands as a prominent example of her output in prose fiction, while her practice across multiple forms — poetry, the essay, journalism, and the libretto — marks her as a writer whose engagement with literature has not been confined to a single mode. Her activism has been a parallel dimension of her public life, running alongside her literary production.

The breadth of her work has drawn recognition from institutions across several countries. She received the Casa de las Américas Prize and the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Prize, as well as the Premio Internacional de Poesía Ciudad de Melilla and the Anna Seghers Prize. The French government awarded her the distinction of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, acknowledging her contributions to literature and the arts. She has additionally received the Premio Biblioteca Breve and the Hermann Kesten Prize, the latter granted by the German branch of PEN International in recognition of writers who speak out on behalf of persecuted colleagues.

Further honors have continued to accumulate across her career. The Reina Sofía Award, given in recognition of Ibero-American poetry, was among the distinctions she received, as was the Carlos Fuentes International Prize for Literary Creation in the Spanish Language. This last award, named for the Mexican novelist and given to writers who work in Spanish, places Belli within a tradition of literary achievement recognized at an international level and attests to the sustained critical regard her writing in the Spanish language has earned.

Dare to change the world There is nothing quixotic or romantic in wanting to change the world. It is possible. It is the age-old vocation of all humanity. I can’t think of a better life than one dedicated to passion, to dreams, to the stubborness that defies chaos and disillusionment.

There are not many intellectuals left of Harold Pinter's stature who dare raise their voices - and with such force - against the menace of U.S. and the unrestricted use of its power. Pinter's voice is an unceasing thunder.

Poetry for me is very easy. It's like a lightning bolt. I feel this calling, and the first line of the poem comes into my head, and I just have to go to the page, to the typewriter, to the computer or whatever and write it.

I grew up in a very difficult country, a very oppressive situation because of the Somoza dictatorship. My family was in opposition to Somoza; Somoza was a liberal, and my family were conservatives. These were the two traditional parties in Nicaragua.

Novels give you the opportunity to create a whole world. Because you create people, you make them talk... You decide who they are, whether they live or die. It's the closest thing to feeling like a god that you can come to.

I never thought that sex was wrong, sinful, dirty. When you take away the thought of things being dirty or forbidden, then you can really enjoy your sensuality.
