James Cotton
James Cotton was a blues musician, singer, songwriter, and harmonicist who worked across the blues and rhythm and blues genres throughout his life.
Born on July 1, 1935, in Tunica, Cotton grew up to become a singer, harmonicist, bandleader, and conductor. He performed in the blues and rhythm and blues genres, working in English across his career as a musician. His roles as both bandleader and conductor placed him in an organizing position within the music he performed, and his work as a singer-songwriter meant he contributed to the material he brought to audiences as well as to his own performances.
Cotton died on March 16, 2017, in Austin. The LCNAF authorized label for his name — Cotton, James, 1935–2017 — records the span of his life as a United States citizen who spent those years as a blues musician, singer, and harmonicist.
