John Avery
The late seventeenth century saw the height of the golden age of maritime piracy, when English seafarers operating beyond the reach of crown authority carved out careers through plunder and illicit trade across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Henry Every, also known as John Avery, was born on 23 August 1659 in Newton Ferrers, England, and would become one of the more notorious figures operating in that world.
Every worked as a pirate, privateer, and slave trader during the 1690s, a period when the boundaries between licensed seafaring and outright piracy were frequently blurred. As a citizen of the Kingdom of England, he operated in an era when the state's ability to police its sailors at sea remained limited, and men with his range of occupations were far from uncommon in the ports and shipping lanes of the time.
Every died in Devon in 1699, returning, it seems, to the region where he had been born. The Library of Congress, which catalogs him under the name John Avery with an active date of 1695, reflects the dual identity he carried through historical records. That cataloging note remains one of the more concrete anchors his name has in the documentary record today.
