Piet Hein's short aphoristic poems, known as gruks, first appeared in the Danish daily newspaper Politiken in the weeks following the German occupation of Denmark in April 1940, offering readers compressed observations in verse form during a period of sudden political upheaval.

Born in Copenhagen in 1905, Hein pursued an unusually broad education, studying at the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark, and Yale University. This range of formation across the humanities, the sciences, and engineering shaped a career that moved freely between poetry, mathematics, design, and invention. He worked under the Old Norse pseudonym Kumbel, a name he used when publishing the gruks that began accumulating in Politiken from 1940 onward. Writing under a pseudonym in a public newspaper allowed Hein to address his readers while maintaining a layer of distance from direct identification during the occupation.

Beyond the gruks, Hein worked as an inventor and designer. He invented the Soma cube and the board game Hex, creations that placed him at an intersection of recreational mathematics and design running alongside his literary output. He wrote in both Danish and English, extending the reach of his work beyond a purely Scandinavian readership. His activity across these distinct fields — poetry, mathematics, invention, and design — reflected the unusually varied education he had received at institutions in Denmark and the United States.

Hein received formal recognition from several institutions and bodies during his lifetime. He was awarded the Ingenio et arti, a Danish honor granted by royal appointment, as well as the Emil Aarestrup Medal. Academic institutions acknowledged his contributions through a Doctor of Humane Letters and an honorary doctorate from Odense University. He died in Middelfart in 1996, having maintained across his career the pseudonym Kumbel that he had first adopted when the gruks began appearing in Politiken under German occupation more than five decades earlier.
