Richard Hamilton
In 1956, Richard Hamilton produced a small collage titled Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing? — a work that would become closely associated with the emergence of pop art as a movement.
Hamilton was born in London on 24 February 1922 and went on to study at Saint Martin's School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art. His practice spanned a wide range of disciplines: he worked as a painter, collage artist, photographer, designer, draftsperson, and computer artist, making him one of the more versatile figures in British art of the twentieth century. His connection to the pop art movement ran throughout his career, drawing on the visual language of consumer culture and mass media. He remained a British citizen throughout his life and worked primarily in English.
Over the course of his career, Hamilton received several awards recognising his contributions to art. He was given the John Moores Painting Prize, the Arnold-Bode-Preis, the Max Beckmann Prize, and the Praemium Imperiale, an international prize awarded across artistic disciplines. He died in London on 13 September 2011, the same city where he had been born nearly ninety years earlier. The Library of Congress records him under the authority label "Hamilton, Richard, 1922–2011," a small but concrete marker of how institutions have chosen to fix his place in the broader record of modern art.
