Rosie Scott
Rosie Scott was a New Zealand-born novelist and writer who composed her work in English across a life that moved between two countries.
Born in Wellington on 22 March 1948, Scott was educated at Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Auckland, and later at Western Sydney University. She held New Zealand citizenship throughout her life, and her education traced a path from her home country toward Australia, where she would eventually settle.
Her work was recognised through several distinct honours. She received the Bruce Mason Playwriting Award, marking a contribution to dramatic writing alongside her identity as a novelist. She was named a Member of the Order of Australia, one of that country's civic distinctions, and she received the Sydney PEN Award, connecting her to the literary and free-expression concerns that PEN represents. These three honours, drawn from playwriting, civic life, and the PEN tradition, reflect the range of her engagement with writing and its public dimensions.
Scott died on 4 May 2017 in the Blue Mountains. The Bruce Mason Playwriting Award, given for work for the stage, stands alongside her practice as a novelist to confirm that her writing engaged more than one form during her lifetime.
