Michael Sullivan
Michael Sullivan was a Canadian-born art historian and sinologist who worked in English throughout his career.
Born in Toronto on October 29, 1916, Sullivan attended Rugby School before going on to study at the University of Cambridge, including Corpus Christi College, and later at Harvard University. His education spanned two of the English-speaking world's most prominent academic institutions. He held Canadian citizenship and wrote in English across his scholarly life.
Sullivan received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a competitive grant awarded to support researchers and artists. He lived to the age of 96, dying in Oxford on September 28, 2013, nearly a century after his birth in Toronto. His work as both an art historian and a sinologist placed him at the intersection of two distinct scholarly disciplines.
