The FA Cup final of 1979, in which Arsenal defeated Manchester United, stands as the defining moment of Terry Neill's managerial career — a result that brought him the trophy he had pursued across three consecutive Wembley appearances.

Born William John Terence Neill in Belfast on 8 May 1942, he was educated at Bangor Grammar School before making his way into professional football as a player. He took up the centre-back position and went on to captain Arsenal, building an intimate knowledge of the club that would later shape his time in the dugout. His playing career gave way to management, and before arriving at Arsenal for a seven-year spell he held the manager's position at Hull City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Northern Ireland — a varied apprenticeship across club and international football that prepared him for the demands of one of England's largest clubs.

As Arsenal's manager, Neill assembled a side capable of sustained cup competition. He guided the club to three consecutive FA Cup finals between 1978 and 1980, a sequence that placed the team at the centre of English football's attention over that period. The 1979 final against Manchester United yielded the trophy. The following year brought another final, and in that same season of 1980 Neill guided Arsenal to a European final as well, extending the club's reach into continental competition. It was a concentrated run of achievement that measured out his tenure in silverware and near-misses alike.

Neill died in London on 28 July 2022, having lived long enough to see his years at Arsenal assessed as a period of genuine cup ambition. The concrete record of that time — one FA Cup won, two further finals contested, and a European final reached — remains the factual measure of his work at the club.

The Steelers are a working class team and this is a working class town. We remember our fathers coming home from work dirty. We'd talk about the Steelers at the dinner table like they were part of the family. We relate with the team.

We've had a difficult and trying time with all the political troubles but throughout that period, football has been a unifying force and the fans remained supportive. The atmosphere was unbelievable and I guess I felt it more than most given past history. Let's hope this is a stimulant and the starting point for a new future for Northern Irish football, because we've been in the dumps for many years.

I think they'll qualify and I don't think the manager should be sacked despite all the media criticism. There clearly has to be a bit of rethink but I do believe, with the individuals they've got, that England are capable of doing very well. Hopefully they will examine their recent performances and their pride will stimulate them.

I think that says a lot about the kids' attitude toward the team aspect of this. Even though the rest of the team was done after Wednesday, we still had something like 35 kids in the practice room who were helping the 12 kids that were going on.

From my wrestlers, my goal for them is to meet or exceed their seeds in their brackets. This is a tough conference meet, and we will need every point we can get.
