Born William John Terence Neill in Belfast on 8 May 1942, he was educated at Bangor Grammar School before making his way into professional football as a player. His playing career gave way to management, and before arriving at Arsenal for a seven-year spell he held the manager's position at Hull City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Northern Ireland — a varied apprenticeship across club and international football that prepared him for the demands of one of England's largest clubs.
As Arsenal's manager, Neill assembled a side capable of sustained cup competition. He guided the club to three consecutive FA Cup finals between 1978 and 1980, a sequence that placed the team at the centre of English football's attention over that period. The 1979 final against Manchester United yielded the trophy. The following year brought another final, and in that same season of 1980 Neill guided Arsenal to a European final as well, extending the club's reach into continental competition.
